A Russian Customs bale seal. The seal is made of lead and has an irregular shaped piercing through it from one edge to the other. The seal has been stamped on one face with a partial inscription in Cyrillic script: [PIЖ]OПOPTA, translated as 'RIGA PORT ... 17(8)2. The seal is decorated with the Arms of the Russian State, to the left of which is Ю, and to the right of which is the letter T; these letters may mean 'Jute'. Below the arms is what is probably a seal crimping tool. The date [17]82 is visible above the Arms. Overall, the seal measures 18.2mm in diameter and 5.5mm in th…

Glass stud. Facetted plano-convex glass octagonal gem, with chips on its flat back and possible traces of a loop or other attachment. Dress accessories of jet, and its less costly mass-produced imitations in black glass, became particularly popular in fashionable emulation of Queen Victoria's prolonged mourning for her Prince Consort, Albert, who died in 1861. Presented along with three wire fragments in open loops of 5.5mm diameter and 1mm thickness which may be related to this object, and which are at all events unlikely to be associated with others presented n the group. The wire i…

Glass bead. Glossy opaque black sub-spherical bead with aperture of diameter 3.2mm. The unblemished surface, regular form and small aperture suggest a recent date. Jewellery of jet, and its less costly mass-produced imitations in black glass, became particularly popular in fashionable emulation of Queen Victoria's prolonged mourning for her Prince Consort, Albert, who died in 1861. Glass bead. Moulded translucent mid blue annular bead. The bead was probably hand made using a rod as a former; a central moulded aperture is 4.5mm in diameter. The short annular form of blue bead was long-lived, and appears in later Iron Age graves at Garton and Wetwang Slack, East Riding of Yorkshire, though the majority may be of Early Anglo-Saxon date in Lincolnshire; they fall into Guido's (1978, page 65) Group 6iv. Glass bead. Moulded translucent cobalt blue biconical bead; Guido (1978, page 97 fig. 37) referred to this form as her small biconical bead ; this example is at the large end of the size range she offers. One side of the bead protrudes more markedly than the other. The cylindrical aperture is 2.2mm in diameter. These are more usually Late Roman, but are known from Britain throughout the Roman period. Copper alloy possible sword belt hanger fragment. Cast sub-triangular plate with a blunt-ended backward bent hook. The plate is gently concavo-convex in form and retains the stubs of two iron rivets, a fastening suggesting its robust attachment. Iron unidentified tanged implement. Wrought iron object comprising a tang of length 32mm, now of square section (though this form could arise from corrosion rather than manufacture), and a shouldered triangular 'blade' whose thickness increases from 3.3mm towards its flared end, where it is 8.5mm thick. This expansion is the opposite of the form expected of a bladed tool or weapon, and the generally good condition of the object suggests this is not merely an eccentric effect of corrosion. This reporter considers a function as a specialist craft tool or punch is perhaps the most likely…

Copper alloy possible mount. Cast flat-backed plate with central aperture 12mm square which is framed by a stepped border which protrudes most markedly next to the aperture.
