A copper alloy Roman nummus of Valens (AD 364-78), dating to the period AD 364-375 (Reece Period 17), GLORIA ROMANORVM reverse type depicting the emperor advancing right, holding standard and dragging captive. Mint of Lyon.
This coin is a 'minim'. It has a very small flan and is missing over half of the design on both the obverse and reverse. It has probably been cut down, possibly from an officially issued coin. Quite significant numbers of cut-down nummi of Magnentius are found in Britain (eg. S Moorhead, A History of Roman Coinage in Britain, p. 193, Fig. 50; G Boon, 'Counterfei…

Object type: DRESS HOOK
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Buckinghamshire
Workflow stage: Published
Gilded silver hat hook or cap badge. The design on the front is that of a lion. The face and ears are prominent and raised and the mane is made of twelve prongs which are curved to imitate free-flowing hair. On the reverse is soldered a double bent recurving hook.
Discussion: The hook on the reverse of this item is similar to hooks found on other hat badges. Although there are no exact parallels similar many hat badges can be found on the PAS database: YORYM-A6C928 (2013 T64), YORYM-2095D4 (2013 T93), PAS-1F1024 (2009 T99), GLO-DAB1D4 (2005 T184) and SF-970504 (2006 T323).

Object type: CORE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Published
Dark grey flint of mediocre quality, with browner mottled patches, core. Irregular fragment of flint, possibly originally from an ovoid nodule, with six or more long parallel flake removal scars on its dorsal side representing soft hammer working from one end at a clear striking platform, probably before this object was detached from the nodule. The relict of the core was perhaps reused as scraper, as one of its curved edges bears short possibly pressure flaked retouch, and the opposite edge is battered. This reuse was possibly by a left-handed person to judge from the position of ret…
