Lead crucifix fragment. Cast top and arms of a cross with very slightly expanded pointed ends to its remaining members; the shaft is lost at an ancient break. The arms in particular have bevelled arises which impart an irregular hexagonal section. Patinated overall. This may be a mortuary cross, a simple token of Christian faith which would occasionally be placed in a medieval or later burial. If so, it is among the tidier examples known. Suggested date: probably Late Medieval, 1350-1500. Height: 21.6mm, Width: 35.5mm, Thickness: 4.5mm, Weight: 12.51gms.

Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL

Copper alloy strap end. Cast zoomorphic strap end of Anglo-Scandinavian style; in some respects resembling Thomas Class G which is dated to the later 11th century. A wedge-shaped splayed end formerly retained a strap of thickness 5mm, secured with a single rivet of length 7.7mm and diameter 1.7mm. This springs from a moulded collar which separates the attachment from an elongated sub-triangular plate which, unusually, is set at right angles to the plane of the strap, and set back from the front of the collar moulding. This terminal bears features which bear interpretation as the point…
