An incomplete copper alloy Roman (AD c.43-c.100) Polden Hill brooch, missing one of its wings, its pin and and the foot, including its catchplate. Overall, the brooch measures 35.6mm long, 23.2mm wide and 16.2mm thick. It weighs 11.08g. The brooch had a hinge mechanism. The surviving wing is sub-cylindrical, measuring 18.9mm from the pin slot to the end cap, and 7.1mm in diameter. It has three vertical grooves on its front half. An incomplete Early Early-Medieval (450-600 Anglo-Saxon) small-long brooch, missing the (iron) pin, a corner of the head-plate (recent break) and the projection of the catchplate (old break). It measures 38.18mm in length, (max)19.30mm in width, (max)11.48mm in depth and weighs 6.11 grams. The head-plate is rectangular in shape (19.30x16.42x1.64mm) with a border of punched triangles flanking the edges and a further line of punched triangles running vertically along the centre. A cast copper alloy Polden Hill brooch of variant 2, dating to the Roman period, c. AD75-175. The wings are semi-cylindrical and terminate with a break which occurred during antiquity. The axis bar, spring and pin are all missing. The head of the brooch rises up from the wings and tapers downwards forming the bow of the object. At the top of the head is a rearward facing lug. Copper alloy brooch fragment, probably from a cruciform but possibly from a small-long brooch. The fragment comprises the base of the curved bow, a plain flat field slightly tapered from top to bottom retaining a single side lappet in the form of a bird's head with eye and curved raptor beak, and a tranverse ridge at the top of the lower part of the foot. The stub of a catch plate projects from the back of the flat panel. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 500-600. Length: 22.9mm, Width: 24.8mm, thickness (clear of catch plate, at base of curved bow): 3.5mm, Weight: 8.81g.
