Lead pencil; formerly termed a stylus. Cast lead rod of round section with a moulded tapering point at one end, flat, smoothed and rounded at the other. The object is bent and lightly gouged close to its mid point. Such objects are identified as styli when equipped with a flattened and end to serve as an eraser, but the rounded end here may have fulfilled the same function. It might alternatively serve as a scribe for marking goods, timber or stone. Suggested date: Medieval, 1200-1500. Length (as found): 56mm, Diameter: 6.7mm, Weight: 21.92gms.

Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: East Riding of Yorkshire

A lead shield shaped trade weight with what appears to be three lugs, one at each point of the traingle. The rear is plain and the front has what appears to be a raised reverse "S" shaped emblem over a raised linear line and loop with a point or barb at the widest end. Lead weighs such as this were commonly used to weigh goods under the averdepois system from 1390 in England and were used throughout the 15th century. It is likely that these weights represent a desire to standardize the trade weight system. Biggs & Withers (2000, p.34) discuss the difficulties in dating shield we…

Object type: CRUCIFIX
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Lead crucifix fragment. Cast top and arms of a cross with very slightly expanded pointed ends to its remaining members; the shaft is lost at an ancient break. The arms in particular have bevelled arises which impart an irregular hexagonal section. Patinated overall. This may be a mortuary cross, a simple token of Christian faith which would occasionally be placed in a medieval or later burial. If so, it is among the tidier examples known. Suggested date: probably Late Medieval, 1350-1500. Height: 21.6mm, Width: 35.5mm, Thickness: 4.5mm, Weight: 12.51gms.

Lead shot. Cast ball with mould line and the stub of a casting sprue, lightly patinated overall. The size and mass suggest this would be used in a light fowling piece or 'rook and rabbit' gun. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1700-1800. Diameter: 10.4mm, Weight: 6.62gms.

Lead spindle whorl. Cast plano-convex whorl with larger and smaller flat surfaces and a central moulded aperture of diameter 8mm, Walton Rogers form A2. The upper (wider) surface has an annular dimple around the aperture which, along with irregularities in the sides, probably arises from casting and cooling in an open mould. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 700-1000. Diameter: 22.7mm, Thickness: 12.2mm, Weight: 29.49gms.

Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: North Lincolnshire

Lead pendant. Cast disc with a punched countersunk aperture of diameter 2mm close to its edge and the opposite edge bevelled, though on the other side. A crudely inscribed design on the side from which the hole was punched comprises a circle with a cross within it, with three shorter strokes extending from the lower arm of the cross, one to the right (as viewed) respecting the circular border, and two to the left passing across it. The other side bears a smaller and even more erratically incised circle with more deeply knife-cut cross and saltire superimposed. The disc is unpatinated …
