A fragment of a shard from the rim of a vessel, of Roman greyware, dating from AD 43 - 410. The object is curved in profile and the rim is rolled. The fabric is coarse, of a dark grey-brown colour with frequent small inclusions. The internal fabric is the same colour as the external fabric indicating that the vessel was evenly fired. Greyware is a common type of Roman pottery and was common during the 1st and 2nd centuries, but continued in use in some areas into the 4th century.

Four Roman body sherds of a ceramic grog ware vessel (AD 43 409). Each orangy brown sherd has fresh breaks and probably belong to the same vessel. A Roman ceramic rim fragment, possibly of a Vectis Ware (variant), unclassified form. c. AD 300-c. 375. Tomalin 1987: 30-40. The rim sherd of this small bowl is mid-grey with an orange core and is tempered with felspar, crushed flint and grog. The breaks are fresh. Height: 26.9mm; width: 29.7mm; maximum thickness: 10.1mm. Weight: 13.13g. When complete the outer diameter of the rim would have been about 8cm. Vectis ware is hand-made, well finished and relatively hard, being barely scratched with the fingernail.
