A complete Medieval lead personal seal matrix of 13th-century date. The matrix is circular and flat. On the front there is a stylised eight point star in the centre surrounded by a crudely engraved legend that is not deep enough to create a prominent impression. It appears to read + S' IOh'IS FIL' h - WISIE (Seal of John son of Hawise or Helwise). Many letters are not clear, but the final E is very obvious. Normally a feminine genitive ending, it suggests that this is a matronymic seal (mentioning the mother of the seal owner). The reverse of the matrix is undecorated and the attachme…

A worn copper-alloy as of Claudius, contemporary copy, c. 41-54 AD (Reece period 2). Reverse: Illegible, Minerva advancing right brandishing shield and spear. Uncertain mint. Robert Kenyon, following on from the work by the French scholars P-A. Besombes and M. Bompaire (in Trésors Monétaires XXI, 2005), is working through the British examples of Claudian coinage recorded through the PAS assigning many so-called Claudian contemporary copies to Roman auxiliary mints which operated at Lyons (Gaul) and in Spain. This example is a native copy.
