In this example the two attachment holes are incomplete but the rest of the fastener is intact. Object type: BRIDLE BIT
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Bedford
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete cast copper alloy openwork harness fitting, a probable cheek piece from a bridle fitting of the late Early-medieval period (11th century AD). The object is Anglo-Scandinavian in design and is a fragment of a larger fitting. This is likely to be one half of the cheek piece, the other side of the plate was probably symmetrical with a central hole and a projecting arm for the attachment to the leather harness strap (Williams 2007:2). The plate is faintly decorated in what is probably Jellinge Style, with a curled beast apparently consuming its own tail. This was a common de…

Object type: CROTAL
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete cast copper alloy one-piece crotal bell of post-medieval date. The crotal bell has a girth-seam which is decorative rather then indicative of a two-piece casting. Much of the bottom half of the bell is broken and missing. There does not appear to be any decoration on either the upper or lower half of this crotal bell. These attributes suggest a 17th or 18th century AD date.
