A large, worn and corroded iron keyhole type horseshoe of post-Medieval date, Circa 1700, Prince Rupert smithy type. The shoe is U' shaped in plan and of flat section, with a rounded inner arch and elongated and tapered heels. There is evidence of a fullered groove with the corroded remains of four probable T-shaped nails. It appears to have five nails to each branch, although this is uncertain due to corrosion deposits. The toe section is heavily worn, with some upstanding of the metal. Although this is probably a draught shoe, Ivan G. Sparkes notes that this type may have been use…

A large forged iron horseshoe of probable seventeenth century date. The shoe has a deep fullered groove with turned down calkins and is deeply concave to the hoof side and convex to the ground. Both branches are equal with probably four nails to each branch. Five corroded nails are in situ but it is unclear if they are T-shaped, but with a fullered groove it is probable. Usually there are nails to the toe section as examples illustrated in Ivan G, Sparkes, Old Horseshoes. page 19. The weight and size suggest this is probably a draught shoe. Length of shoe: 146.02 mm. Width: 133.68 mm

Object type: JETTON
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A worn copper alloy jetton of the 14th century AD. The jetton is hard to parallel although there are several similar in Mitchiner (1988). The jetton appears to depict a male figure on the obverse (possibly the king enthroned) and a single stranded cross fleuretty on the reverse. Of the similar jettons, all have a triple cross fleuretty. The legend is also very hard to read, if it is indeed a proper legend and not nonsensical as is sometimes seen. Althoug a direct comparison could not be found, it is probable that this this an English jetton of the period c. AD 1300-1400.

A large lead alloy vessel plug or pot mend, probably dating from the medieval to post-medieval period. The pot mend is simple and consists of two pieces of lead joined by a central stem; this would have plugged a hole in the wall of a vessel, porbably a copper alloy vessel. Although hard to date without further contextual information, it is likely to date from the period c. AD 1300-1700.
