Object type: STRAP FITTING
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An incomplete cast copper-alloy strap loop frame dating to the medieval period. The strap loop would have been trapezoidal in plan, with a wider outer frame edge decorated with two small projecting knops at its outer corners, with a third larger knop in the centre, which is what remains here. There would have been two triangular prongs inside the loop which would have helped stay the strap. One side arm of the frame is partially retained. For a discussion on these types of strap loops, see Egan and Pritchard 1991, p. 231-233; cf. Ibid Fig. 149, no. 1263. c. AD 1150-1400.
