Medieval to post-medieval writing lead with one end round in cross-section and pointed, and the other flattened into a rectangular cross-section and pierced by an ovoid hole. The latter end is blunt rather than sharp as is the case with Biddle's (1990) Class II. Length 57mm. Diameter 5mm. Width 8mm. Thickness 3.5mm. 12th - 16th century. Writing leads like this follow the traditional shape of the earlier writing tablet styli, although it is unclear how effective a lead stylus would be for inscribing wax, and it seems more likely that they were used to make grey marks, as pencils. …

Object type: FURNITURE FITTING
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper alloy object, possibly a furniture fitting of post-medieval date. The object is a rod with several collars and knops of varying size, with a large central spiralled knop, akin to terminals of pins and purse bars of the post-medieval period. The terminal on this example is a small rounded point. Below the large spiral are three collars or ribs, with the rest of the rod being broken. Although the style may indicate a purse bar, the size and form would appear too big for a purse bar frame terminal; comparison with those illustrated in Ward-Perkins (1940) show that this object is…

A copper alloy probable hilt band or spacer for a knife handle. In construction it appears to be post-medieval, probably dating from c1500 to c1700 AD; a soldered joint can be seen on the undecorated, D-shaped and D-sectioned hoop. Although the ring is now not circular, it may be still in its original shape which would also suggest a knife fitting rather than a finger ring.

Object type: STRAP FITTING
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete cast copper-alloy strap loop frame dating to the medieval period. The strap loop would have been trapezoidal in plan, with a wider outer frame edge decorated with two small projecting knops at its outer corners, with a third larger knop in the centre, which is what remains here. There would have been two triangular prongs inside the loop which would have helped stay the strap. One side arm of the frame is partially retained. For a discussion on these types of strap loops, see Egan and Pritchard 1991, p. 231-233; cf. Ibid Fig. 149, no. 1263. c. AD 1150-1400.
