A post-Medieval cast copper-alloy double-looped buckle (c. 1570-c. 1700). Frame only survives. This buckle is convex at the front and flat at the rear. It is rectangular in plan, has rounded corners and each loop is similar and sub-rectangular. Internal and external frame edges are rounded. The narrowed bar is triangular in cross-section, flat at the rear. Viewing the buckle from the side, each loop rises, from the centre to the outer edges from the horizontal plane. The frame has a dark green patina remaining in some small areas, otherwise the frame is abraded with a reddish…

Medieval cast copper alloy strap slider, c.1150-1400 AD. The slider consists of a single, trapezoidal loop with a pair of opposed internal triangular projections about a quarter of the way up the sides of the frame. The frame is rectangular in section. Uneven diagonally opposing wear within the frame suggests a long period of use. Egan and Pritchard Dress Accessories 1150-1450 (1991: 234) illustrate a number of examples, including ref. 1258, which is very similar and they assign to a late 12th to late 14th century date. They note that these strap loops are thought to be the earlies…

Medieval strap-end, tapered in shape, made from two thin sheets of copper alloy, the front slightly thicker than the backplate, held together at the attachment end by a single separate copper-alloy rivet. No trace of any rivets can be seen at the closed end, which is curved and has a slight central knop. The front sheet is decorated at the attachment end with a crudely made pair of V-shaped grooves which appear to have been made from individual punchmarks. The knop is more carefully shaped on the front. It probably dates broadly from the 14th century. Length 35mm, width 11mm, thickn…

Medieval strap-end made from copper alloy, with a cast central spacer plate and a pair of soldered-on sheet outer plates. The outer plates are oval, with two small copper-alloy rivets in the centre of one of the longer edges. Between these, on both faces of the strap-end, is a decorative circular hole which is crossed by a groove - Egan and Pritchard call this a 'grooved aperture'. The outer plates are made from an alloy which has corroded to a brown colour with patches of light green. The forked spacer plate is much thicker and clearly made from a different alloy, now with a smoot…
