Incomplete worn Roman Rosette brooch, hinged keyhole type variant, flat tinned copper alloy plate, head with seven slightly concave sides and two (of originally six) radiating knops, central perforation containing iron corrosion an broad outer groove. Trapezoidal foot with twin longitudinal ribs. Twin lugs with copper alloy pin and broken catchplate on reverse. Surviving width 21mm, surviving length 30.5mm. 2mm thick. Mid 1st century AD. Incomplete Roman copper alloy plate brooch of umbonate or domed boss type, Mackreth 2011, British type 6.e (see plate 109, no.11166), hinge of pin (shank missing) contained within twin lugs on the reverse below the broken chain loop, much of the outer flange missing, two lobes (of originally seven) survive both with single ring-and-dot, break at base where catchplate missing. The sixteen radiating triangular cells on the boss were originally inlaid with alternating coloured enamels, now decayed with only red surviving in four cells. Diameter (excluding lobes) 30mm.
