Square lead alloy coin weights were used in the 14th and 15th centuries (Lion, Ships and Angels) but this one does not match known designs or masses. It may be a 4 drachm apothecary's weight, but it is not the stan…

A lead alloy object, possibly a weight, toy or maybe metal working debris. The object is an irregular disc which is fairly flat on both faces and has damaged edges. There are faint traces of incised lines on the edge which may have been a zigzag like a pastry jigger. Thee are deep scratches and damage on both faces. Near the centre of each face is a deep hole but they do not appear to join to perforate the plate. However, the object could have rotated on prongs resting in the hole and may be a wheel from a toy. The metal has a rough white patina. It is 27.8mm long, 25mm wide and 5.1mm…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An unidentified object that at first glance appears to be a musket ball. The object is lead alloy, spherical and solid. It has a projecting neck or collar which is circular in section, 6mm in diameter and 3.4mm long. The end of this is concave. Unusually, there are areas of gilding or gold paint surviving on the surface of the ball, particularly near the projecting sprue. Areas of red brown patina indicate where just the top layer of the gold is missing, but in other areas, the surface of the ball has a smooth grey patina with some white and yellow tints in the patina. The collar may …

Object type: SHOT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A lead alloy musket ball of Post Medieval date. It is distorted and covered with deep indentations and grooves. This is probably a combination of impact damage (probably from striking an area of rough stones) and post depositional damage. The ball has a well developed white patina. At approximately 16mm diameter and 12.7g it was probably fired from a pistol. The ball is now 17.2mm long, 16mm wide and 10.5mm thick. See Harding, 2012, for more information on Civil war Lead Shot.

A lead alloy object, possibly a weight or maybe metal working debris. The object is a disc which is flat onone face and convex on the other, thicker at one side than the other. It may have been created by melted lead alloy solidifying in a circular vessel on a slight angle. There is an indented saltire cross on the convex side, but it does not appear to be deliberately formed. There are scratches on the flat face. The metal has a smooth yellow patina. It is 46.7mm long, 44.8mm wide and 8.5mm thick. 93.2g. The patina is similar to Civil War material from the same area, so a Post Mediev…
