Object type: POT
Broad period: IRON AGE
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Nicely made pottery rim sherd in flint-tempered fabric recovered from a rabbit scrape. The sherd weighs 21g and comprises the flat rim, short everted neck and high rounded shoulder of an earlier Iron Age round bodied bowl (Brudenell's form K). The neck and rim are slightly burnished and reduced whilst the body of the vessel is oxidised. This suggests that the vessel was everted when fired with the rim and neck perhaps buried in ash whilst the body was exposed. Matt Brudenell has suggested that Early Iron Age pottery was in use from c.800 - c.350 BC (Brudenell 2011).

Incomplete medieval gilt copper alloy book fitting, a cast strap end with a sheet backplate. The attachment edge is slightly crumpled and a transverse loop at the distal end is incomplete. Beyond the box there is a lozengiform element with an elaborate quatrefoil engraved on the flat top and a central round aperture in the backplate. The lozenge morphs into a stylised animal head with the transverse loop at its mouth. Many examples of this …
