A fragment of Roman (AD 43-70) copper alloy Hod Hill brooch, consisting of the head and part of the upper bow only, with a probably incomplete pin. It measures 15.11mm in length and weighs 1.36g. The wings are 14.03mm in width with a central slot for the pin. They curl forwards to hold the axis bar, which remains in the form of iron corrosion (visible at either end of the wings and in the slot). One of the wings is rather shorter than the other and is probably damaged. The head is triangular in shape, narrowing to 6.67mm wide just above the top of the upper bow, which is 8.23mm wide.…

A Roman - Post-Medieval (AD 1-1800) hemispherical lead weight or spindle whorl. It stands 6.31mm in height and weighs 22.55g. The base measures 26.60mm in diameter. The central piercing is slightly off-centre and measures 8.11mm (base) and 7.75mm (apex) in diameter. Margeson suggests that the weight of a spindle whorl is suggestive of the thickness of yarn produced, with lighter spindle whorls (3 - 5 grams) being used for spinning cotton and the heavier ones (30 - 35 grams) for spinning wool (Margeson 1993, 184).
