An incomplete Roman copper-alloy crescent type Aesica brooch of first century AD date, possibly AD 50-75. The brooch has a spring-case, half-cylindrical with closed ends. The spring-case has a width of 28.5mm and diameter of 7.0mm. A spring of sixteen coils survives within the spring-case as does the external chord (the chord lays over the top of the spring). It is uncertain whether the chord was held in place by a rear hook or now incomplete lug. An incomplete copper alloy mace head of medieval date. The object is comprised of a hollow cylinder, uniform in internal diameter, with three circumferential rows of four pyramidal knops or spike projecting from the exterior surface of the upper portion. The knops in the middle row are four sided while the upper and lower knops are three sided. Two of the uppermost knops have been lost to old damage as has a large section of the lower shaft. Copper alloy as of Claudius, reverse Minerva advancing right, appears official,weight 7.56g, AD41-54. Robert Kenyon, following on from the work by the French scholars P-A. Besombes and M. Bompaire (in Trésors Monétaires XXI, 2005), is working through the British examples of Claudian coinage recorded through the PAS assigning many so-called Claudian contemporary copies to Roman auxiliary mints which operated at Lyons (Gaul) and in Spain. This example could not be classified as a contemporary copy, auxiliary mint, or Mint of Rome because there is no image.
