A Middle Bronze Age copper alloy Palstave axehead of Schmidt and Burgess 'unclassified low-flanged palstave' type with broad blade (group III) and without side loop, belonging to the Taunton phase of metalworking and corresponding to Needham's period 5, 1500-1150 BC. The axehead is incomplete and broken into two pieces, with loss due to the break. The blade of the palstave is sub-triangular in plan with slightly convex expanding sides and a very slightly curved cutting edge. Complete copper alloy buckle frame. The frame is asymmetric with an oval loop and a smaller trapezoidal loop for attachment to the strap. The pin is missing and there is a groove around the centre of the strap bar between the two loops where this would have rotated. The frame is roughly flat on both faces with file marks still evident, the trapezoidal loop is sub-square in section whilst the oval loop is more D-shaped in section. Incomplete Medieval copper alloy bar shaped fitting or mount. The mount is roughly tongue-shaped with a tapering spike projecting from one end and a broken terminal at the other end - the original overall shapeof these terminals is unclear due to heavy wear of the edges. The mount is D-shaped in section with 2 raised transverse ridges. Towards each end of the bar is a single circular-sectioned rivet. Traces of gilding survive along the upper surface. An incomplete Roman copper-alloy crescent type Aesica brooch of first century AD date, possibly AD 50-75. The brooch has a spring-case, half-cylindrical with closed ends. The spring-case has a width of 28.5mm and diameter of 7.0mm. A spring of sixteen coils survives within the spring-case as does the external chord (the chord lays over the top of the spring). It is uncertain whether the chord was held in place by a rear hook or now incomplete lug.
