A worn copper alloy halfpenny of George III (AD 1760-1820) dating to AD 1799 (ship issue) and minted in Birmingham (Soho). The coin has been altered into an object resembling a cogged wheel; the outer edges of the coin have been pinched out of the obverse in nine places. This gives the effect of a cogged wheel or circular saw blade; all of the pinches run in the same direction. It is unclear how these pinches were formed, possibly by brute force (hammering) or by heating the edge of the coin to make the metal more malleable. Its use is unclear. Spink (2006) 3778.
