Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete copper alloy double looped, or 'spectacle' buckle of the early post-medieval period. A little over half of the buckle is retained; the integral strap bar is missing the pin but iron corrosion suggests an iron pin. The frame is plain and undecorated. Similar buckles are illustrated in Whitehead (1996, no 317) and are dated to c. AD 1500-1650.

A series of complete cast lead alloy circular uniface tokens, probably dating to Post Medieval period (c. 1500-1850 AD): Class Powell 2 and 8. The tokens are of a greyish-white colour. Lead tokens had a wide variety of uses and were made locally; they are therefore hard to date precisely. Those with initials are generally thought to be Post Medieval in date and due to the style of lettering, these examples may date to the latter half of this period. Row 1: Eight identical tokens. The token has the raised initials 'S' on one side, with a central pellet and the number '12' below; the…

A Post Medieval cast copper-alloy double loop vesica-shaped buckle and a fragment of pin, c. AD 1550-1650. The buckle frame is vesica shaped with cusped outside edges created from moulded pellets; there are slight protrusions at either end of the strap bar which have sub-oval holes punched into them. The outer edge of both loops is sub-lozenge-shaped in plan and is also punched with a lozenge-shaped hole; all of the holes have created bevelled inner edges from the front face. Object type: COIN
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A worn copper alloy halfpenny of George III (AD 1760-1820) dating to AD 1799 (ship issue) and minted in Birmingham (Soho). The coin has been altered into an object resembling a cogged wheel; the outer edges of the coin have been pinched out of the obverse in nine places. This gives the effect of a cogged wheel or circular saw blade; all of the pinches run in the same direction. It is unclear how these pinches were formed, possibly by brute force (hammering) or by heating the edge of the coin to make the metal more malleable. Its use is unclear. Spink (2006) 3778.

Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL

A Post medieval lead alloy powder measure cap. It is a small circular vessel with a circular base and straight sides, probably dating from the 17th Century. It is somewhat distorted. It was the cap of a powder measure (also known as an apostle since there were twelve on each bandolier) which contained enough gunpowder for a single round. Two scars show where two small loops once projected from the sides at the base; both are now missing. These would have allowed it to be attached to the bandolier and the body of the powder measure by a cord. For reference see Courtney, P. 1988 'Small …
