Object type: MOUNT

A complete copper alloy mount of probable Roman date. The mount is circular in plan with an openwork triskele design, though with four tendrils rather than the usual three. Four knob-ended tendrils curve around the interior of each resulting sub-triangular cell and are joined to the outer frame by integral sprus. The knobs appear to be separately cast and fitted into circular recesses at the end of each tendril. Examination of the reverse shows t…

I have examined two coins reported found together in Gloucestershire. Both coins are silver denars from central Europe in the early 17th century. One is an issue of the Holy Roman Emperor Matthias, as king of Hungary (1608-19), dated 1617. The identity of the other is less clear, as some of the inscription is obscure. There is no question that it is a similar coin in terms of its denomination and general origin. However, it appears not to be an issue of the Habsburg kings of Hungary, although its designs of the arms of Hungary on the front and the Virgin Mary, as patroness of Hun…

Copper alloy figurine of a cockerel. It is rendered in quasi-naturalistic form with flattened comb and tail feathers and a broader stumpy body with abbreviated wings against its sides. The body stands on a round section lug representing the legs, with the stub of a peg in its base. This object is presumably from a grouping of the god Mercury and his accompanying animals: a goat and a cock, and the peg may suggest this comprised separate figurines mounted together. The piece is, however, of low quality, and presumably was locally made. As a cult item dedicated to the god of traders and…
