I have examined two coins reported found together in Gloucestershire. Both coins are silver denars from central Europe in the early 17th century. One is an issue of the Holy Roman Emperor Matthias, as king of Hungary (1608-19), dated 1617. The identity of the other is less clear, as some of the inscription is obscure. There is no question that it is a similar coin in terms of its denomination and general origin. However, it appears not to be an issue of the Habsburg kings of Hungary, although its designs of the arms of Hungary on the front and the Virgin Mary, as patroness of Hun…

Object type: AXE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: West Berkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete iron axe head of uncertain date. The axe has a curved cutting edge and splayed tip, its thickness gradually widening towards the now missing axe butt. Iron axes are notoriously difficult to date when discovered outside of a dated archaeological context as the general form of axes has continued from at least as early as the Roman period (Manning 1976, 3). This example was possibly used as a Woodsman's axe and is likely to date to around the medieval period, probably from the 10th to 16th centuries AD.
