A lead steelyard weight, probably dating to the Roman period (AD 43-410). The weight is biconical in form. Both the top and bottom of the weight show signs of iron corrosion where a suspension loop would have been attached with an iron bar through the centre. The surface is now a light grey/brown colour with numerous scratches and dents including a large rectangular depression. Many similar examples have been found on the PAS database; for example NMS-1815C6, SWYOR-B85A02 and KENT-DC6FC3. The length is 45mm and the width is 30mm.

Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Cumbria
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A lead fragment that is possibly a component part of a flintlock or a binder probably for a knapped gun-flint from a flintlock musket of post-medieval to modern date. The flintlock was introduced in the middle of the 16th century and became the main regulation firearm for the British Army during the reign of William III. Cast lead alloy or lead, perforated circular weight or spindle whorl of unknown age. The weight has a circular perforation. It has an external diameter of 14mm, and the central perforation has a maximum diameter of 7mm and the weight is 10.37g. The weight is undecorated and in form could well date back to the medieval period. In the "Finds Recording Guide", Geake (2001, p66) points out that: "The function of lead weights would have varied, from spindle-whorls to fishing weights to trade weights." She adds that spindle whorls should ideally be circular and must have a central perfor…

Tongue shaped piece of lead, thins slightly towards one end. One face is slightly convex, cream coloured and with a rough irregular surface. The other is slightly concave, and a mottled mid grey in colour with occasional patches of cream similar to the other side. The grey surface appears to be an applied layer as the patches occur where it is missing. The surface on this side is highly decorated with raised shapes. Three parallel raised curving lines form a border running around two edges of the piece, finishing with an in-turned end. This appears to be the representation of a long …
