Object type: FLOOR TILE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Cheshire West and Chester
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete fired ceramic, possibly a floor tile or vessel, dating from the Medieval to the Post-Medieval period. The object is sub-rectangular in plan and rectangular in cross-section. Each edge is incomplete. The lower face of the object is sandy and uneven, due to damage. The upper face is well worn and has a wide flat ridge measuring 3.5mm in width. The object has a mid-orange fabric with occasional small inclusions. The object has been fired evenly. The thickness of this fragment indicates that it is likely to have been used as a floor tile, however the raised band/flattened ri…

Iron tanged spatulate implement. Wrought iron round ended spatulate blade of length 56mm with a tang of length 27mm, probably broken, aligned with the back edge of the blade. Though what might correspond to a cutting edge is angled, this could be a quirk of corrosion or cleaning and the blade as a whole lacks both the V section which would indicate a knife, and the further modification of the form of its blade from recurrent sharpening. A range of spatulate tools and implements are known from Early Medieval and Medieval contexts. Suggested date: Unknown, Early Medieval to Medieval, 60…

Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Iron possible fork fragment. Wrought iron fork of two tines, of maximum length 50mm. The currency of forks as table implements for eating began in the 17th century, while the condition of this object more closely resembles that of medieval ironwork reported along with it. Before that date, forks might be used to help the carving and serving of meat. A distinct class of Middle to Late Saxon implements - of uncertain use - also includes examples with bifurcated or forked ends, though this example is larger than many of these. An alternative identification may be as a very corroded pair …
