Incomplete, distorted and highly abraded medieval copper alloy buckle with an integral plate. Of gilding, which was almost certainly once present, there is no trace. The oval frame survives as one side and a small bent part of the other. Two slight lateral lobes flank the pin hole. The flat plate tapers from these to two small lateral lobes at the junction with a roundel, at the centre of which is an iron rivet. Beyond two more lobes the plate continues, now much narrower, to an incomplete fleur-de-lis terminal with a central hole. Extant length 85mm. Width of frame c.26mm. Width of p…

A post-medieval cast copper-alloy asymmetrical shoe buckle. The frame is sub-rectangular with one straight edge and one rounded edge. The centres of the edges and sides are internally convex. It has two drilled holes through the centre of each side to hold a separate spindle. The spindle, broken at one end, and dislocated, is still broadly in situ along with a broken stud chape; the pin is missing. The spindle is of iron which has become corroded. The chape features two semicircular cut-outs adjacent to the sleeve which houses the spindle. Its sides converge beyond this point; the t…

An incomplete post-medieval copper-alloy double-looped buckle (c. 17th century). Only around one half of the frame is present; the rest, virtually all of one of the loops, is lost to an old break. The extant loop has a sub-triangular protrusion (moulded trefoil) at the central outer edge, and with similar protrusions at each end of the pin bar; one has lost its tip. These latter sat at the centre of trefoil sides, delineated by grooves. At the outer edge the side elements of the trefoil provide two of a total of seven petals around a central pellet, giving a flower (rosette) at these …

A post-medieval copper-alloy shoe or knee buckle with separate pin and stud chape surviving largely intact. The frame of the buckle is symmetrical, comprising two roughly D-shaped sides which curve inwards towards the axis bar. At the centre of the sides of the frame, and at each of the outer edges there are sections of moulded radiating lines; at one end these act as a pin rest with central groove. A separate iron spindle/axis bar is retained within two opposing holes in the frame; traces of corrosion product are visible. A separate stud chape is also retained attached by the axis ba…
