Cast lead alloy weight, probably a spindle whorl, dating from the medieval period, that is c. AD1200-1500. The weight survives almost complete and is in good condition. It is biconical in shape, with one side decorated with raised dots and the other with raised lines, radiating outwards from the central perforation that held the spindle in place. Lead weights like these are common finds, but only rarely from excavated contexts which is why date and origin are difficult to pinpoint. Decorated lead-alloy weights are very rare finds in excavations, but are often found by metal detecto…

A fragment of a cast lead alloy decorative figure of a bird or 'shy cock', possibly part of a Medieval or Post Medieval toy, c. 13th-17th century AD. The fragment consists of a plate, roughly oval in shape and decorated on one side with moulded feathers. The shape and moulded decoration indicate a bird's neck, chest, wing and body, nearly to the tail. The other face is undecorated and the perimeter edges of the remaining plate are curved inward suggesting perhaps that this was a hollow cast toy bird similar to that illustrated in Forsyth and Egan 2005, p. 143. However, that example is…
