Lead spindle whorl. Cast plano-convex whorl of Walton Rogers Form A1, with a markedly off-centre moulded aperture of diameter 9.5mm. The size of aperture may relate this to Viking age whorls of this form rather than Anglo-Saxon versions; these were especially prominent at 10th-century Coppergate, York. The mass would indicate a use plying cord. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 900-1000. Diameter: 33mm, Thickness: 20.6mm, Weight: 84.24gms.

Copper alloy plate brooch of Weetch Type 1. Cast discoid plate bearing the image of a backward facing beast with jaws agape in low relief, with a billeted border. The back retains the stubs of a pin seat and catch plate, suggesting the pin to have been roughly aligned with the beast. Abraded. This appears to be a simple version of a common type, described by Hattatt (1987), page 315, fig. 103 nos 1310-1311) as a 'poor man brooch': a useful indicator of the Viking Age settlement of ordinary folk. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 900-1000. Diameter: 28.3mm, Thickness (clear of pin g

Copper alloy mount. Cast rectangular openwork mount in heraldic style, with the framed image of a leopard advancing left and facing the viewer, with a recurved tail held high behind. A drilled rivet hole of 2mm diameter is set in each corner of the frame, and one retains a burred dome headed rivet of head diameter (now) c.3.5mm and length 5.5mm. The piece would be viewed against a coloured ground, perhaps dyed leather. Suggested date: Medieval, 1175-1225. Length: 31.7mm, Height: 22.7mm, Thickness: 2.8mm, Weight: 7.63gms.

Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper alloy buckle plate fragment. The display face from a buckle plate bearing moulded heraldic decoration. The subject is either a lion or hound advancing left with front paw raised; the beast looks ahead rather than turning to face the viewer. It is confined by a frame around the outside of the plate, which retains very slight traces of gilding. A pair of drilled rivet holes of diameter 1.6mm are set in the inner edges of the field as the plate would appear when worn. Suggested date: Medieval, 1200-1250. Length: 23.6mm, Height: 16.9mm, Thickness: 1.9mm, Weight: 3.60gms.

Copper alloy buckle plate. Rectangular plate of thickness 1mm folded around a buckle's strap bar (lost) with a narrowed (by c.3mm) and thinner (by c.0.4mm) plain extent behind, the front and rear being secured to a strap of thickness 2.2mm by a pair of dome headed rivets of head diameter 2mm and length 4.3mm. The rivets are located towards the inner edge corners of the plate as it was used. The display face bears an heraldic device of a backward facing lion in strong relief against a stippled possibly stamped ground. Gilding traces appear across the display face. A closely comparable …

Copper alloy buckle. Cast D shaped buckle frame with a thickened and expanded outer edge and a narrowed strap bar grasped by beast head terminals with triangular eyes or ears in relief and their jaws strongly modelled, conferring a reptilian appearance. These features appear on both sides of the frame. Abraded. The zoomorphic decoration nods to Danelaw tastes. Suggested date: Early Medieval to Medieval, 1000-1100. Copper alloy buckle. Cast D shaped frame with a thickened outer edge and a narrowed strap bar. A spot of rust adhering to one side may hint at its deposition along with an iron pin (now otherwise lost). A combination of materials is characteristic of Early Anglo-Saxon dress fasteners, albeit copper alloy buckles of the period are not common, while the simple oval form was long lived, and could admit a Middle or Late Saxon/Anglo-Scandinavian date. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 700-1000. Length: 12.9mm, Height: 18.9mm, Thickness: 4.0mm, Weight: 3.07gms

Copper alloy buckle. Cast D shaped buckle frame with a thickened outer edge of rounded section and a narrowed strap bar grasped by three-dimensionally modelled beast head terminals with prominent ears or eyes represented by indentations and protruding muzzles. A rectangular sheet metal plate of thickness 0.6mm and length 21mm is wrapped around the strap bar and is secured by a corroded iron rivet, with the curving edge of a further rivet hole at its end; there are traces of a rocker work saltire decoration on the display face of the plate. Copper alloy buckle. Cast D shaped buckle with a thickened and expanded outer edge of oval section. A narrowed strap bar is grasped by beast head terminals with a faintly duck-billed appearance. A light groove at the mid point of the outer edge of the frame is a pin rest. In so far as is apparent given the abraded condition, the display face is slightly more rounded, or perhaps the back is worn smooth by use. The zoomorphic style is, in a Danelaw context, clearly influenced by Viking tastes. A similar buckle from Winchester is reported as being of 11th to 12th-century date (Hinton, D.…

Copper alloy possible girdle hanger fragment. A single drawn wire loop, now open, which is threaded through a suspension loop with a rounded end, and with an incised line below the loop; the rest is lost. Identified by Dr Kevin Leahy (in April 2011) as of Early Anglo-Saxon date, this is suggested by this reporter as possibly coming from the upper end of a girdle hanger, or alternatively from some other form of pendant or amulet. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 500-600. Length (overall): 16mm, Width (pendant object): 6.9mm, Thickness: 2.1mm, Weight: 0.87gms.

Copper alloy brooch fragment. Cast plate with a step on its display face and the stub of a lug on the back, probably either a pin seat or a catch plate. The form of brooch is uncertain, though it might have been either a cruciform or square headed form. Heavily abraded. This object was allocated to the Early anglo-Saxon period on the advice of Dr Kevin Leahy (in April 2011). Suggested date: Early Medieval, 500-600. Length: 35mm, Width: 18.4mm, Thickness (clear of lug): 4.9mm, Weight: 9.08gms.

Copper alloy mount. Cast square plate bearing moulded and gilded decoration of Salin Style 2. A central lozengiform cell is now empty, though retaining internal traces of a white deposit, possibly fixative. This cell has a plain border. It is surrounded by a further lozenge shaped border in relief, which is finely pelleted or billeted . The four corners between the sides of the latter lozenge and an outer intermittently billeted (with fine cuts) rectangular frame form triangular fields. These are occupied by decorative motifs. The clearest is a creature with a serpentine body, a possi…

Cast hollow copper-alloy pyramidal mount from a scabbard, with a square base. Each side bears a narrow border confining decoration comprising lozenges and triangles, some filled with a dull blue material, probably a corrosion product, and others of an uncertain tint. The reverse bears the stubs of lugs on the inner faces of opposed sides, presumably the remains of a transverse fixing bar, and concreted material, now stained green, fills the apex of the hollow pyramid. Length: 13.8mm, Width: 13.7mm, Height: 7.3mm, Thickness (side): 1.5mm, Weight: 3.36g. Pyramidal mounts are t…

Object type: HANGING BOWL
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper alloy hanging bowl mount. Cast disc with enamelled design comprising four pelta or kidney shaped figures springing from an outer border around a central dot, all rendered as cells filled with dull blue enamel. A field between the figures is filled with brick red enamel. The edge of the disc is grooved, as if the design had been built up on a plain disc by the addition of an openwork plate forming the cells to be filled by enamel. The use of enamel is a British style thought in this context to illustrate a reflux of Celtic influence, and bowls with this decoration are especially…
