Object type: BODKIN
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Essex
Workflow stage: Published Find published
An incomplete silver bodkin, missing most of its eye and that terminal end, also slightly bent. The shaft has a flattened hexagonal section and tapers to a point. Below the eye the shaft is decorated on both faces an engraved flower and incised zigzags with foliate infill. Below this on one face there is an incised capital letter E, this is probably part of the owner's initials. There may have been more lettering but the shaft is now too worn for any other letters to be seen.

Object type: HOOKED TAG
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A complete silver-gilt dress hook of composite construction. It consists of a circular cast plate with an integral rectangular loop and eight decorative projecting circular knops around its edge. Held onto the front of the plate, via a dome-headed rivet, is a domed six-petalled openwork flower. The rivet also holds a separate circular back plate onto the reverse of the cast plate, which has a separate hook soldered to its lower edge. Discussion: This dress hook is of Read Class I, being of composite construction (Read 2008, p. 123, ref. 504). A similar item was found in Suffolk (…

Object type: HARNESS PENDANT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: East Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A Medieval cast copper-alloy horse harness pendant dating from the 13th-14th century AD. The harness pendant consists of a shield shaped pendant body with a sub-triangular suspension loop and circular hole; the hole runs parallel to the front face of the pendant and traces of iron are visible, suggesting that the rivet was composed of iron. The harness pendant mount bar is now missing, as is most of the rivet that would have held both componens together. The front face of the pendant bears traces of recessed decoration and inlaid red enamel, but the heraldic motif is illegible due to …

A late Medieval lead token. There is a raised cross on one face, with a pellet in each quarter. There is perhaps the remains of some further detail on the other face, but this is too worn to make out. The object bears strong similarities to a token illustrated in Fletcher (2005, p.40), which is suggested to be of 15th century date and is one of a series from this period that appear to have been strongly influenced by contemporary coin designs. This particular example is crudely executed, but the similarities are enough to suggest that this is probably of a similar date. The reverse is…
