Complete copper alloy shoe buckle with a maker's mark "MT" stamped on the chape. It dates from about AD 1690 - 1720. The frame is sub-rectangular in plan and curved in profile. It is drilled for a separate iron spindle which is still present and contains the copper alloy pin and the stud chape. The buckle frame has a dark green shiny patina with iron corrosion product and calcified deposits present. A similar buckle is shown as No. 659 on page 102 of Whitehead's "Buckles 1250-1800. Dimensions are: 21.11 mm long, 3016 mm wide, 3.56 mm thick and the buckle weighs 4.15 grammes.

Both faces are badly worn, with the punched and engraved decoration on the front now standing proud of the surrounds. Decoration comprises a fleur-de-lis outlined by an engraved line and on a ground filled with closely spaced punched annulets and enclosed within an engraved circle, diameter 22mm. Extant length 32mm. The main part, next to the loop, is of rectangular cross-section and decorated with a transverse groove and five punched or engraved probable annulets. Incomplete medieval copper alloy probably single-looped oval buckle frame, with all of the probably offset bar missing. The sides and the convex outside edge are decorated with six panels of pellets moulded in counter-relief, a mist unusual decorative arrangement. Those two running from the edge onto the sides are curved and tapering. In the centre of the edge there are two very small trapezoidal panels, both with only two pellets. These are flanked by much larger circular panels. Extant length 15.5mm. Width 27.5mm. 13th century. (field FLO9)
