Cast lead trade weight, in the form of a circular disc, with some marks on the upper face that are deliberate. Just out from the centre of the disc is a raised pellet within an incuse circle, with seven linear rays emanating from the circle, making it look like the spokes of a wheel. There are other pairs of parallel oblique lines beyond the wheel motif, which are commonly seen on these disc weights. The weight weighs 34.2 g which equates to 1.2 ounces avoirdupois or just over one troy ounce.
Bailey (2011) illustrates similar lead trade weights in the form of a disc, one with a cen…

Cast copper alloy cup weight, round in plan and trapezoidal in profile, tapering from a diameter of 35 mm at the rim to a diameter of 27 mm at the base. The exterior and interior of the cup weight are incised with two fine parallel lines a little more than half way up the sides, that runs around the circumference and the interior diameter of the cup. There are lathe centering points inside and out on the base of the cup which show that the lines were machine-made. The cup weighs 55.6 g which equates to just under two ounces avoirdupois or just over an eighth of an avoirdupois pound wh…

A Post Medieval to early Modern zoomorphic cast copper-alloy vessel leg, probably dating to the early to late 19th century AD. The vessel leg is zoomorphic, probably depicting a ram, with its head moulded depicting symmetrical inwardly-spiralling horns, curly forelock, large pointed oval ears, with almond-shaped eyes surmounded by hairy brows followed by an elongated snout and long furry neck. The head transitions into one enlarged hind quarter with leg angled perpendicular to its face, terminating in a cloven hoof. The reverse of the vessel foot is shallowly hollowed at the face with…

A cast copper alloy object, perhaps a repair for a cooking vessel, though this remains very uncertain. The object tapers slightly and has two prominent ribs on opposed sides running along its length. There is a transverse rib running across the face of the wider end. The only possible break is across the narrower end.

Post-medieval copper alloy vessel leg and foot. It is D-shaped in cross section with a flat back and convex front. The leg has three moulded vertical ribs running down the length. It narrows and thins from the top to the lower end. A broad transverse collar separates the leg and foot. The flaring foot again has three vertical ribs running down the front. The leg rises at about 80 degrees but the foot is curved out slightly more and thickens and widens towards the base which is mostly broken.
At the top of the leg the triangular concave end is irregular with a mass of iron on the up…

A large copper-alloy vessel made from sheet metal. This vessel has a rounded base, not suited to being placed on a flat surface, shouldered biconnical profile surmounted by a vertical collar and outwardly rolled rim. Weight is 1225.0g, height is approximately 230.00mm, maximum diameter is 270.00mm and the circumference is 835.00mm. This vessel dates from the late Post-Medieval to Modern period. This artefact has Arabic influences and is likely to be from the time of the Arts and Crafts Movement, AD 1860-1910, so can be broadly dated to AD 1850 to present. It is possible that this vess…

Description: Post Medieval silver hawking vervel, 12mm long, 9mm wide and 9mm deep. The object is in fair condition with a weight of 1.24 grams and is of Lewis and Richardson type C.ii.
It consists of a ring of d-shaped cross-section, 3mm wide, which is inscribed JOHN CUTS. Attached to the loop is a shield-shaped plate with a crest showing a collared greyhound, erased.
Discussion: Vervels were used to attach a hawk or falcon's leather jesses to a leash, which, held in the hand, enabled the bird to be trained in short distance flight. The leash could also be used to fix the bird t…

A fragment of a cast copper alloy object of 9th century date. The object measures 46mm in length and has one straight side and one side is shaped to fit the cast design. The surviving terminal is in the form of an animal head from whose mouth projects a rounded attachment loop. The head has flattened ears and small circular pits for the eyes, the latter probably intended to receive an inlay. Behind the head is a worn panel which is difficult to interpret and which has been inlaid with niello, a small patch of which survives. There are also two small patches which suggest the former pr…

An incomplete cast copper-alloy object of uncertain use, probably dating from the Roman to Post Medieval period. The object consists of a tapering, flat-sectioned pin or shaft, which has a small circular loop on the widest edge of the reverse; this suggests that the object was meant to fix onto another component. The circular loop hole runs parallel to the reverse face and as there is iron corrosion in this area, it is likely that a further part of the object was composed of iron, similar to a brooch axial pin. The object is of an even dark green patina. It measures 42.6 mm long, …
