Object type: HORSESHOE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Dorset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A large worn wrought iron horseshoe of a probable late medieval period. The shoe appears to have three nail holes to each branch with fragments of the nails still in situ. The toe section is very worn so nail holes may of been present. One heel has corroded away, the remaining heel is tapered and thickened. There is no evidence of a fullered groove. The style and size suggest a draught shoe and probably a dove shoe of circa 14th to late 15th century. Reference Ivan. G. Sparkes, Old Horseshoes, Page 15. Length of shoe: 126.89 mm. Width: 135.93 mm. Thickness: 7.88 mm. Weight: 231 grams.
