Incomplete copper-alloy Roman bow brooch of probable T-shaped type and dated AD 50-150. Only the wings and uppermost part of the bow survive. The wings are cylindrical in shape with the axis bar enclosed within and an open slot, notably located off-centre, for taking the hinged pin. The head of the pin is still in situ. The off-centre placement of the hinge slot appears to represent a deliberate avoidance of the raised crest which runs from the head of the brooch down the centre of the arched bow. The wings of the brooch are each decorated with a single incised diagonal line. Th…

Incomplete Roman copper-alloy enamelled disc brooch of 2nd century date. The brooch is circular with a concave face and a raised open-topped conical centre which probably held a stone. It is notable that the base of the cupped opening within the central cone is pierced, presumably for fixing the missing central stone or other component in place. The overall design contrasts to the broadly similar tutulus style disc brooches in that they have a flanged conical centre. Surrounding the central cone the face of the brooch is decorated with an inlaid red enamel design. The red enamel fills…
