Incomplete copper-alloy Roman bow brooch of probable T-shaped type and dated AD 50-150. Only the wings and uppermost part of the bow survive. The wings are cylindrical in shape with the axis bar enclosed within and an open slot, notably located off-centre, for taking the hinged pin. The head of the pin is still in situ. The off-centre placement of the hinge slot appears to represent a deliberate avoidance of the raised crest which runs from the head of the brooch down the centre of the arched bow. The wings of the brooch are each decorated with a single incised diagonal line. Th…

Object type: COIN WEIGHT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Heavily corroded copper-alloy coin weight of probable post Medieval date, c.1500-1700. The weight is flat and sub-square with an illegible design set within a circle on both faces. The present weight of this item is 11.8g which roughly corresponds to 182 grains. Assuming that the corrosion process has made this item lighter then the potential coin weight to coin comparison for this post Medieval period include a Sovereign of Henry VIII (182 grains) or a Rose Ryal of James I (196 grains in the 3rd coinage).
