Object type: STUD
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Northumberland
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A copper-alloy stud of Viking date, c. 800-1050.
The stud is robust and in excellent condition, bearing a thick cylindrical shank (height = 28.16mm; shank thickness = 8.34), with flashmarks from the casting running vertically up opposed faces, and a 'ship-shaped' head consisting of a domed pointed oval. The head (length = 22.63mm; width = 11.02mm) bears moulded decoration, consisting of an outer border along the lower outside edge and through the centre running point-to-point that can be viewed as a double-collar/band. This banding across the top runs over chevrons of very shallow angle.
