Object type: HARNESS MOUNT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Medieval copper alloy shield-shaped armorial mount probably from harness. There is a lateral projection on both sides at the upper angle and a third projection from the point at the base of the shield. Each projection is in the form of a short cast leg ending in a perforated three-toed foot, thereby raising the plate from the surface to which it was riveted in order to allow a strap to pass behind the mount. Remains of red and black enamelling survive in the cast armorial decoration on the face of the mount, but the surface treatment of the metal is missing. Blazon: Ermine on a fe…

Copper alloy stud. Cast heater shield shaped stud with an integrally cast shank of length c.14mm projecting from the back, now angled slightly upwards. The device on the display face appears to comprise the three leopards of England, rendered in a series of diminishing size and delineated in partial outlines; the lowest of the three beasts may alternatively be an antlered stag, though this is probably a quirk of its partial corrosion. Suggested date: medieval, 1300-1400. Height: 18.8mm, Width: 14.7mm, Thickness (plate): 1.5mm, Weight: 3.37gms.
