Object type: STRAP FITTING
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete Early Post-Medieval (1500-1700) copper alloy sword belt fitting, consisting of a hooked plate looped into a suspension loop with a fragment of adjoining mount. This fragment of mount would have had three suspension loops from which a trio of such hooked plates would have hung. In turn, the scabbard straps would have been attached to these plates. The hooked plate is roughly triangular in form, with the remains (worn break) of a pierced knop (for the iron rivet) at one end while the globular-terminalled hook, which curves back on itself to meet the decorated face of the p…

Object type: SHOT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Lead musket ball. Cast ball with mould line and an untrimmed casting sprue. The mass, which is over one averdepois ounce, indicates this could serve in a smooth bore musket of military specification. The sprue would not prevent the ball being used so long as it was positioned in line with the gun barrel. It could be deliberately left on a shot intended to be included is a paper cartridge along with its propellant charge of gunpowder. It may alternatively indicate the local manufacture of shot, as the products of an arsenal would be more systematically trimmed. Suggested date: Post-Med…

Object type: SHOT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Lead musket ball. Cast shot with smoothed stub of sprue and with a deep dent from impact, lightly patinated overall. The mass, at just over one averdepois ounce, suggests this would be apt for a smoothbore muzzle loading weapon of military specification. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1600-1800. Diameter: 18.3mm, Weight: 28.62gms.

Object type: PIPE (SMOKING)
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Clay tobacco pipe fragment. Straight stem and pointed basal spur of a moulded tobacco pipe with wire drawn bore. The narrow diameter of the bore, c.2.2mm, suggests this comes from a relatively recent pipe; similar spurs appear on some pipes dated to the mid-19th century. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1800-1900. Length: 42.3mm, Weight: 3.57g.

Record ID: NLM-A4D315
Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Lead weight. Cast discoid weight with bevelled edges, thicker to one side than to the other, grey and unpatinated. The mass does not correspond with recent systems for the measurement of weight. The fresh state of the metal must introduce significant doubt as to whether this object saw use at an early date. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1900. Diameter: 39.0mm, Thickness: 8.1mm, Weight: 80.08gms.
