Lead musket ball. Cast ball with mould line and an untrimmed casting sprue. The mass, which is over one averdepois ounce, indicates this could serve in a smooth bore musket of military specification. The sprue would not prevent the ball being used so long as it was positioned in line with the gun barrel. It could be deliberately left on a shot intended to be included is a paper cartridge along with its propellant charge of gunpowder. It may alternatively indicate the local manufacture of shot, as the products of an arsenal would be more systematically trimmed. Suggested date: Post-Med…

Lead musket ball. Cast shot with smoothed stub of sprue and with a deep dent from impact, lightly patinated overall. The mass, at just over one averdepois ounce, suggests this would be apt for a smoothbore muzzle loading weapon of military specification. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1600-1800. Diameter: 18.3mm, Weight: 28.62gms.

Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Lead weight. Cast discoid weight with bevelled edges, thicker to one side than to the other, grey and unpatinated. The mass does not correspond with recent systems for the measurement of weight. The fresh state of the metal must introduce significant doubt as to whether this object saw use at an early date. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1900. Diameter: 39.0mm, Thickness: 8.1mm, Weight: 80.08gms.

Lead metalworking debris. Cast fragment which has been poured into and has set in the side of a rectangular vessel or mould. There is light patination on some surfaces, presumably suggesting a relatively recent date. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1600-1900. Length: 39.3mm, Height: 19mm, Weight: 80.57gms.

Lead and iron wheel. Cast rouletting wheel with a central axle hole of diameter c.2mm, comprising a cylindrical lead drum studded with six offset pairs of iron pins set so as to produce a regular series of depressions when rolled across a surface. The drum may have a larger diameter on one side than the other - a point only discerned when preparing the image of the object, which if correct would have caused it to describe a circle when in use. Each side has a circular patch around the hole where a handle would have retained the axle. This might have served for the preparation of paper…

Lead shot. Cast ball, possibly with slight traces of a circumferential belt arising from 'set up' at the time of firing. The mass, at just under one averdepois ounce, would be apt to a smoothbore firearm of military specification. The slight surface irregularity of this ball suggests local rather than industrial manufacture. However, the total lack of patination may indicate a later date than is usual, unless disturbance from a sealed context can be adduced. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1600-1850. Diameter: 17.1mm, Weight: 27.77gms.

Lead vessel repair or Pot mend. Cast plug to repair a vessel wall of thickness 3.4mm. Patinated overall. Fragments of a sandy orange oxidised fabric are trapped in the side of the plug, and along with its tidy finish may tend to indicate a Roman date. Suggested date: 43-410. Lead vessel repair or pot mend. Cast plug mending a vessel wall of thickness 8mm, and retaining crumbs of a whitish fabric or cement. The pouring of lead is visible where it has solidified on one side of the object. The fabric, if that is what it is - spots of similar material also appear away from the edges of the plug - might suggest a Roman date. Suggested date: possibly Roman, 43-410. Length: 47.1mm, Width: 32.2mm, Thickness: 12.4mm, Weight: 92.19gms.

Lead possible shot. Cast shot, flattened by impact on one side and with a crazed and fractured surface, probably the result of extensive post-depositional damage and possibly of heating. The size might suggest this to bewhat remains of a musket ball, while its remaining mass would be apt for use in a pistol. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1600-1800. Diameter: 18mm, Weight: 16.42gms.

Incomplete medieval lead figurine probably depicting the crucified Christ, the lower part missing. The reverse is flat and the front face almost so. Both arms are raised in a position suggestive of crucifixion rather than of prayer, though the hands, with fingers indicated by fine engraving, are not pierced. The nimbed head is ovoid and the eyes, nose and mouth are engraved in a somewhat rudimentary manner. Further lines on the torso suggest a garment. A small attachment hole is placed centrally just above the break. Height 39.7mm. Width 35.4mm. Thickness 3.7mm. 12th - 13th century.
