Record ID: NLM-A64DC1
Object type: WHEEL
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Lead and iron wheel. Cast rouletting wheel with a central axle hole of diameter c.2mm, comprising a cylindrical lead drum studded with six offset pairs of iron pins set so as to produce a regular series of depressions when rolled across a surface. The drum may have a larger diameter on one side than the other - a point only discerned when preparing the image of the object, which if correct would have caused it to describe a circle when in use. Each side has a circular patch around the hole where a handle would have retained the axle. This might have served for the preparation of paper…

Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Lead weight. Cast discoid weight with bevelled edges, thicker to one side than to the other, grey and unpatinated. The mass does not correspond with recent systems for the measurement of weight. The fresh state of the metal must introduce significant doubt as to whether this object saw use at an early date. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1900. Diameter: 39.0mm, Thickness: 8.1mm, Weight: 80.08gms.

Cast lead-alloy weight, probably a spindle whorl dating from the medieval period, that is c. AD1200-1500. The weight is circular, with a large perforation in the centre that held the spindle. The surface is very worn. Unlike many other spindle whorls of the same date range, this example has a very distinct moulded decoration: There are five moulded flat knops on the outside of the whorl with incised (probably also moulded) lines between each two knops. Lead weights like these are common finds, but only rarely from excavated contexts which is why date and origin are difficult to pin…

A Post Medieval copper alloy trade weight. The weight is circular in plan and has a raised rim at the top, forming a cup shape. There are stamp marks visible; at the centre is a circle and arranged around this is a crom with a 'W' underneath, a square topped shield with a cross within, and a third unclear stamp. The 'W' probably stands for William III (AD 1694 - 1702).

Object type: VESSEL
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Lead vessel repair or pot mend. Cast plug mending a vessel wall of thickness 8mm, and retaining crumbs of a whitish fabric or cement. The pouring of lead is visible where it has solidified on one side of the object. The fabric, if that is what it is - spots of similar material also appear away from the edges of the plug - might suggest a Roman date. Suggested date: possibly Roman, 43-410. Length: 47.1mm, Width: 32.2mm, Thickness: 12.4mm, Weight: 92.19gms.
