Lead or lead alloy fragment of an unknown date, possibly casting waste or a partially melted or miscast object. It does appears to have deliberately cast holes, similar to the openwork style, and possible ring and dot decoration. Its original intended purpose is unknown but if it isn't casting waste it could be part of a Late Early Medieval to early Medieval strap-end of Thomas's Class E, similar to LANCUM-2409F1 but cast in lead. Other lead alloy strap ends of the period on the database include NMS-82ED04, NLM-890976, and NMS-45E545. It may have been be a failed lead mold former associated with the manufacture of such objects in copper-alloy. Lead models have been seen as an element of the casting process, possibly as a replacement for wax in the 'lost-wax' method of casting (East 1986, 1-2). A more successful probable example is NMS168. Date unknown but possibly c900 to c1100 AD if not casting waste.
The length is 57mm, width 17mm, and the weight 12.42g.

Roman (AD c. 69-96) T-shaped brooch: The cylindrical crossbar is formed by being curled around the iron axis bar forming a horizontal seam on the reverse of the crossbar. There is some damage on the reverse of he cross bar. The crossbar has a central slot on the reverse to allow the pin to be hinged which is now missing. The outer face of the wings is decorated with triple-stranded transverse ridges in the centre of each wing. The bow protrudes from the centre of the cross bar and is slightly hump-like and is oval in section. The bow and bow head are decorated with a wide vertical ridge. The bow tapers to a blunt broken point shortly after the crossbar. The brooch surface is slightly abraded and has a well developed dark brown patina. It measures 24.16mm long, 38.26mm wide and it weighs 11.6g.
The brooch is an initial T-shaped brooch, which are described as being usually hinged, not enamelled, with no head stud and having fine decoration and date to the Flavian period, AD 69-96 (Bayley and Butcher, 2004: p. 159).

Although this item is made of silver and is more than 300 years old, in my opinion it seems unlikely it was discovered on British soil, under which circumstances it does not qualify as treasure as stipulated in the Treasure Act 1996.

Large and heavy Roman silver finger-ring set with an intaglio. Most of the lower part of the hoop is missing, but is of rectangular profile which expands and swells to triangular shoulders and flat ovoid bezel. Around the top of the ring is a collar of gilding. The intaglio is a pale orange carnelian engraved with a figure of Victory crowning a standing figure of Mars with his head turned the right, unusually away from Victory.
The surface of the ring is very tarnished, suggesting that it has been out of the ground for some time.
Discussion: no good parallels can be found for this ring in Britain. For that reason, and given the uncertainties over its provenance, it seems unlikely to have been excavated on British soil and more likely that it was imported in more recent times from overseas.
