Object type: BROOCH
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper-alloy button brooch of early-medieval date (5th - 6th century AD), of Class C. This example is incomplete in so far as its iron pin been lost to corrosion; a trace of corrosion product is present adjacent to one of the lugs (now so abraded that one cannot distinguish the pin lug from catch-plate). The rim is upturned (H.: 3.2mm) and very slightly flared. The upper surface is decorated with a central moulded anthropomorphic face-mask viewed straight on within a line border. The helmet is formed a pair of nested peltaic outlines. The eyebrows and nose are formed of a single T-s…

Object type: STRAP END
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An early-medieval copper-alloy strap-end, classified as Thomas's (2003, 2) Class A, Type 1 (Trewhiddle style), slightly damaged at the attachment end. This would date the artefact to around the 9th century AD. The strap-end is flat in profile. The plate expands from a width of 10.0mm the attachment end to a maximum width of 13.5mm at the base of the split. From this point it tapers consistently towards an animal head terminal (W.: 6.8mm). The upper half of the split attachment end survives intact, pierced twice, though neither rivet survives. It has also been bent upwards. The lowe…

Object type: CORE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Distal end of a probably conical core. Worked around two thirds of the circumference with unretouched cortex on the other face. The cortex suggests pebble flint. The working scars show the piece has been worked to take repeated parallel removals off a prepared platform. The platform at the proximal end appears to have been deliberately removed by transverse strike and at least one further, very small, blade has been struck off the resulting platform. The flint is pale grey with paler mottling. It is 25.9mm long, 23.7mm by 15.0mm at the platform and weighs 12.40 grams. This style of…
