Cast lead-alloy weight, probably a spindle whorl dating from the medieval period, that is c. AD1200-1500. The weight is circular, with a large perforation in the centre that held the spindle. The surface is very worn. Unlike many other spindle whorls of the same date range, this example has a very distinct moulded decoration: There are five moulded flat knops on the outside of the whorl with incised (probably also moulded) lines between each two knops. Lead weight. Cast discoid weight with bevelled edges, thicker to one side than to the other, grey and unpatinated. The mass does not correspond with recent systems for the measurement of weight. The fresh state of the metal must introduce significant doubt as to whether this object saw use at an early date. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1900. Diameter: 39.0mm, Thickness: 8.1mm, Weight: 80.08gms.
