Object type: VESSEL
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper alloy vessel fragment. Cast leg from a pipkin, aquamanile or small cauldron. The leg is of plano-convex section, flat behind and with a slight though abraded ridge on its front face. The leg terminates in a probably tripartite sub-triangular foot, possibly modelled on an animal paw. This feature would be apt to an item of tableware, but the object is heavily sooted, suggesting its last use was on the hearth. Suggested date: Medieval, 1200-1350. Length: 34.9mm, Height (in use): 29mm, Width: 25.5mm, Thickness: 15.1mm, Weight: 43.21gms.

Fragment of a cast copper alloy two loop bucke. A rectangular section stem or shank which extends between two flat elements with, in so far as they remain, curved edges, and both bearing a rayed pattern of grooves converging on the stem. Rusty stains on the central shank hint at the former presence of a ferrous metal component. This identification was kindly offered by Laura Burnett, with confirmation of this offered by Rob Webley, who comments as follows: 'This looks like the pin bar of a post-medieval buckle, the rust from the missing iron pin. Cf. Whitehead (2003, 65; e.g. no. 402)…

Object type: BUTTON
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper alloy button fragment. Flat discoid and probably composite button, comprising two layers of sheet metal pressed together with a rim, and bearing a crude stamped device on the front. The device appears quasi-heraldic, and presents a creature sitting facing right in an oval panel, flanked by the fronds of a wreath, with a crude crown above. A loop was perhaps formerly held between the layers of metal, whence it has been torn away. The execution is almost rustic, and in strong contrast to the factory-made series of livery buttons, though this might be a crude and early imitation o…

Object type: METAL WORKING DEBRIS
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper alloy metalworking debris. Fragment of copper alloy with a bubbled surface on one side and possibly with flow lines on the other. One 'end' is dished, and this, together with a possibly ridged section of the object, might suggest this to be the remains of a cauldron leg detached and melted down during an episode of recycling. This identification would suggest a Medieval date for this activity. Suggested date: possibly Medieval, 1200-1500. Height: 43mm, Width: 35mm, Thickness: 25mm, Weight: 83.68gms

Object type: UNIDENTIFIED OBJECT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper alloy unidentified object. Flat circular plate with opposed projecting elements; one slightly expanded with a rounded end and the other possibly diminishing in its width, and lost from the point of a bend. One side bears the repeated legend: PATENT, a cushion crown motif and the letters GR, which may hint at the official issue of this object. The numerous articles of ammunition reported hereabouts might suggest this to be from a weapon. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1715-1830. Length: 42.6mm, Width: 20.8mm, Thickness: 1.9mm, Weight: 6.97gms
