Cast lead-alloy weight, probably a spindle whorl dating from the medieval period, that is c. AD1200-1500. The weight is circular, with a large perforation in the centre that held the spindle. The surface is very worn. Unlike many other spindle whorls of the same date range, this example has a very distinct moulded decoration: There are five moulded flat knops on the outside of the whorl with incised (probably also moulded) lines between each two knops. The leg terminates in a probably tripartite sub-triangular foot, possibly modelled on an animal paw. This feature would be apt to an item of tableware, but the object is heavily sooted, suggesting its last use was on the hearth. Suggested date: Medieval, 1200-1350. A rectangular section stem or shank which extends between two flat elements with, in so far as they remain, curved edges, and both bearing a rayed pattern of grooves converging on the stem.
