Lead shot. Cast rifle ball ball with a circumferential ridge around its undamaged side, and with slight scarring possibly from gas erosion on one part of one side. Flattened by impact after being fired at fairly close range, possibly striking a curved surface such as a small branch. Patinated overall. The mass would be apt to either a light pistol or a fowling piece or 'rook and rabbit' gun. The raised belt shows this to relate to the Brunswick rifle introduced into military service in the 19th century. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1840-1860. Diameter (at belt): 15.1mm, Weight:…

Object type: ARCHITECTURAL FRAGMENT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Lead sheathing for iron inserted into stone, as with a fencepost. Cast fragment with fluted or ribbed outer surface, an upper flange where surplus lead has solidified, and a smooth surface within which retains flakes of rust. Patinated overall and rolled up at one end. The juxtaposition with corroded iron may suggest this served as a sheath for structural ironwork to prevent its corrosion and expansion from shattering a stone setting. In such usage, the lead would be poured to fill the space between the iron and the sides of the rebate into which it was inserted. The fluting presumabl…

Lead possible tobacco jar lid handle. Cast object with a waisted flower-shaped knob or handle above a short shank over a broader plate of thickness 2mm; the latter is bent back so as to partially cover the rest of the object. Probably partly melted, crumpled, and patinated overall. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1650-1750. Height: 13.4mm, Diameter: 15.5mm, Weight: 14.52gms.

Object type: CURSE TABLET
Broad period: ROMAN
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Lead possible curse tablet. A rectangle of cast sheet of thickness 1.3mm tightly folded and then rolled into a tapering cylinder. The object is so tightly rolled and compressed as to forbid a use as a weight for a line running through its middle, though a cut on one side might have provided a tying groove. Patinated overall. The light gauge of the sheet and its neat compression differentiate this object from net weights of comparable form. Suggested date: Roman, 43-410. Length: 34.6mm, Width: 11.5mm, Thickness (overall): 8.1mm, Weight: 13.33gms.

Lead shot. Cast ball of a mass apt to use in a pistol or carbine of military specification. The ball exhibits a circumferential belt caused by 'set up': the compression of the unwrapped ball against the sides of the gun barrel in the first milliseconds of the detonation of the propellant charge. The back of the ball, as it was positioned in the barrel at this time, bears numerous facets or dimples of diameter c.3.5mm, with less numerous similar dimples on the other side of the belt. The former may be the result of this ball having a charge of buckshot behind it, as a multiple load whi…

Lead offcut. Cast thick sheet of a gauge apt to structural use, of thickness diminishing from c.7mm to c. 4.5mm, tightly folded into a rectangular lump, hammered at its ends, and indented by the driving or drilling of a tapered aperture from one side; the hole diminishes in diameter from 4.5mm to 2mm. Patinated overall. Suggested date: Unknown, 43-1800. Length: 34.8mm, Width: 31.4mm, Thickness (overall): 11.7mm, Weight: 102.82gms.

Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Lead trough. Cast open receptacle with one flat end and one thicker curved end. The base is flat and the sides near-vertical except at the curved end, which is both stepped and thickened with traces of either casting flash or a thinner upper part, now lost. The object bears a thin off-white powdery deposit within, but lacks any other trace of patination on its outer surfaces. Torn at its mid point, possibly in a single episode which gashed both sides. The object could have been intended to receive liquids, perhaps water for a birdcage or a painter's easel. The lack of surface patina a…

Lead weight. Cast rectangular weight with crisply defined edges between its flat sides. Patinated overall. The mass may suggest this to represent six Scandinavian units of 4.07gms, as used for the weighing of silver bullion, or one Scandinavian ora/ore of c.24gms. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 850-950. Length: 17.9mm, Width: 15.4mm, Thickness: 9.7mm, Weight: 24.32gms.

Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Cambridgeshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A Medieval lead papal bulla of pope Alexander III, AD 1159-1181. The obverse shows the usual depiction of two saints' faces, St. Peter and St. Paul set within pellet aureoles with the word SPASPE above. The reverse reads: ALEX/AND[E]R/PP.III . Both faces of this bulla are bordered with closely set pellets. The obverse and reverse have been sealed with a 12 o'clock relationship. The cord holes are not particularly distinct, visible only as a thin irregular line at top and bottom, but the indents at top and bottom in what would otherwise be a circular disc of lead indicate where the cor…
