Roman silver denarius of Faustina I (the Elder), dating to the period AD 141 to 161 (Reece Period 7). Reverse type AETERNITAS depicting a female figure, possibly Providentia, standing left, left hand holding a globe and with veil blown out behind. Mint of Rome. Cf. RIC III (Antoninus), 351. The diameter is 18mm and the weight 2.86g. Obverse inscription is DIVA FAVSTINA. Reverse inscription is AETE R NITAS. It appears to be uncertain whether the figure with globe and veil on the reverse is Aeternitas or Providentia. There is a tendancy to favour the latter because of the globe

Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Devon

A complete copper-alloy stirrup-strap mount of late early-medieval (Late Anglo-Saxon) date, or slightly later (c. 11th century). The mount can be classified as a Class A, Type 8 example, comparable with those at the more debased end of the spectrum catalogued by Williams (1997, 49; fig. 33; nos. 146-153). The mount is sub-triangular with two shallow small knops at the base, corresponding to the en-face animal heads that protrude from the base of such mounts. It has three rivet holes, two of which contain the corroded remains of iron rivets: those at the base. The rivet hole at the ape…

Medieval to Post Medieval lead alloy or lead damaged cast uniface token. Though damaged, stylistically it appears to be a debased long cross coin, with the cross visible on the obverse. The reverse is plain and undecorated. Lead 'long cross' tokens are difficult to date accurately as they had a variety of uses and were made locally. Historically cross and pellet designs were thought to be contemporary with the similar Medieval coin designs. However recent publication of moulds and double faced tokens which combine Post Medieval initial style designs with cross and pellets suggest they…

Copper alloy decorated disc, probably a post medieval mount of some kind. It has broken into two parts. Possibly a Roman or post-medieval lid, but there is no evidence of hinge or handle (DENO-9058F5 is also missing these but is smaller and incomplete). Another possibility is a bridle boss (eg CPAT-EC4CA7). One side has abraded raised decoration consisting of a central boss, then a band of raised beads, then a band of a possible cable motif, then another band of beads. On the other side there is a raised lip near the edge, this has three 'steps' in it. Nearer the centre there is a low…

Possibly lamp formed on an axe shaped stone. The shape of the stone may be fortuitous but has then had a recess pecked into it, and a shallower channel pecked in a rough curve coming out of it. These features are outlined on the second photo. The purpose of these modifications is unknown but it would have made a functional oil/fat lamp. When placed with the pecked feature uppermost, the object is stable. There are depressions on either side of the objects 'waist' that may be artificial, but these are so worn that it is now impossible to know if they are or not. It is possible that the…

Mesolithic to mid Bronze Age quartzite perforated implement made by modifying a natural quartzite pebble by drilling an hour glass mounting hole. Often described as mace heads, partly due to similar objects being used as such in parts of Africa, the exact purpose of these perforated stones is unclear. However this one demonstrates wear on its point consistent with being used to strike a hard surface. It can therefore be supposed that this artefact may have fractured during use. Dates to between c10000 and c1000 BC. These objects are hard to date as perforated objects with hour glass h…
