Object type: STIRRUP
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An incomplete probable stirrup of late Early-Medieval date. All that remains is a zoomorphic terminal featuring a forward facing beast with pointed ears and a portion of a sub-rectangular body. The shoulders of the body, to either side of the terminal are pointed and the bottom edge is worn. Traces of iron corrosion coat the main plate and the remains of two possible iron rivets appear to remain. The reverse is flat and undecorated. This may be part of a composite stirrup from the bottom of which a separate iron terminal would have projected.
