Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper-alloy medieval jetton, most likely a Lombardic jetton, slightly worn and cracked on one edge, measuring 19.80mm and weighing 1.86g; cf. Barnard 1916, Pl. III. The cracked edge slightly resembles a perforated hole, perhaps to be worn. The same design is on both sides of the jetton, and may represent initials or a monogram. There are two outer rings of concentric dots, and in the centre is an unusual cross-like design made up of two lines. One line spans across the inner circle of dots, whilst the other ends with a small cross at one end and at the other end spirals outwards…

Object type: DIE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Wiltshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A Roman or Medieval lead alloy die, possibly AD 1200-1700. The holes have been punched into each surface, with opposing sides all equaling 7. Dice are most frequently made in bone or ivory, more rarely examples in lead or lead/tin are encountered (Egan 1997:1). The enduring convention of placing the numbers 1-6 so that those on opposite faces total seven are preponderant among medieval dice. Non-regular arrangements are said to be most common from the 13th century to the end of the middle ages. For later medieval pieces a non-regular layout is sometimes a symptom that the dice is a…
