Treasure case 2014 T229: Acquired by Museum of Somerset A silver gilt Medieval mount in the form of the Holy Rood. The piece is a plain cross bearing the haloed figure of Christ crucified. Two standing figures flank the cross, representing Mary on Christ's left, and John the Evangelist on his right (as we view it). A scrolled panel across the top of the cross probably bore the legend INRI (Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudiorum (Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews)) but this is now worn. The base of the cross and the figures of Mary and John stand on a base with a flat top and wide pyramidal…

Description: Rectangular bar-shaped ingot with concave ends. The upper and lower surfaces and the sides are hammered smooth, with ancient abrasions. Metal analysis: Surface metal analysis conducted at the British Museum by the Department of Conservation and Scientific Research indicated an approximate silver content for the ingot of 81%, the remainder being copper, iron, zinc, lead, gold and tin. This surface analysis is likely to give a slight overestimate of the silver content of the core metal as corrosion alters the composition of the surface of the ingot by preferentially leac…
