The mitre was among the badges associated with the German city of Augsburg, noted for its fustian cloths. An early post-medieval date is suggested by the letter style. The plate bears the device of three cinquefoil florets springing from a small tapered receptacle against a parti-coloured enamel ground, mid blue to the right and [now] green to the left. Copper alloy brooch fragment. Hinged Aesica brooch, Mackreth type AES 4.a. Tubular wings clenched behind retaining an axis bar and a cast pin. The wings are met by a broad upper bow with central ridge whose top or crest is lost, flanked by wide flutes with outer ridges, and with knops at its corners. The lower bow is lost. Suggested date: Early Roman, 100-150. Length: 23mm, Width: 26.2mm, Thickness (crest of bow): 5.1mm, Weight: 6.16gms.
