Pottery rim sherd. Sandy oxidised fabric rim fragment, from an open vessel with an everted squared rim. A trace of glaze appears under the rim, suggesting the vessel was splash glazed. Wallace Collyer of the North Lincolnshire Pottery Research Group kindly identified this sherd. Suggested date: Medieval, 1200-1350

Lead and iron weight. Cast discoid weight with the ends of an embedded ferrous object visible in opposite sides. Patinated overall. The mass may suggest this to represent a [slightly overweight] Viking Age ora/ore of c.24gms. Alternatively, or perhaps simultaneously, this may represent six Scandinavian sub-units of 4.07gms for the measurement of bullion. The use of such weights in this period is being explored by Dave Haldenby and Jane Kershaw in the light of finds from Cottam, East Riding of Yorkshire.
